There and Back Again: A Linux Tail

I have been wanting to mumble about my experiences testing Linux out on my gaming system for weeks already. And now it’s the last day of August and I don’t want to break the minimum-of-a-post-a-month thing I’ve had going on, so it’s coming at ya all rush-like. Enjoy.

I rather like the regularity there...

Review: Pixels

What? A movie review? New territory ahead, captain! Yeah, I haven’t done one of these before. Should be fun, right?
SPOILER WARNING: hyphens.

So the wonderful random-comment-picker over at NAG Online saw fit to randomly pick me to go watch an early screening of Pixels, this season’s Adam Sandler romp of WTF. So I roped a guest in (double tickets, don’t you know) and went over to check it out at Ster-Kinerkor’s Cine Prestige at Sandton City just this last evening.

So, for those who care about such things, I have enabled “privacy-enhanced mode” on every currently-embedded YouTube video on r4mzy.co.za. I’ll endeavour to do this on future posts too. This doesn’t affect Vimeo or other video-streaming sites though, and I haven’t looked into whether they even have the option. Why’d I do it? Because for reasons I haven’t fully defined, I don’t think external sites should get to know things about my visitors without my visitors having explicitly opted to engage with the external content. But one shouldn’t think of this change as anything more than a gesture in a particular direction – I’m lazy and won’t be arsed to make significant changes to more things. It just so happens that this particular change was pretty easy to make.

Regularum

Why, would you look at the date! It’s about time I added more text to this thing, innit? Well, let’s see, what have I got to say? …
Starting with myself, I started a new job last week, so that’s been nice. Game-wise, I’ve been playing a lot of The Witcher (one). And something about a giraffe. Yes.

Some Bits (originally…)

This started out as one of those, “another month, another post” kind of posts. Then I made the mistake of “I’ll just put some words down about my GTA V experience,” and now we have this. Basically a review. Except I never meant to review it so there are no screenshots to do the picture things. Once I play the thing again (The Witcher has me right now), I’ll snap some shots. I had meant to write about GTA V, NAG magazine stopping production (though I guess I did that in their comments), The Witcher (still on number one, even though I went and pre-ordered three…), perhaps The Smashing Pumpkins’ new album (I like it – not Siamese Dream or Machina love it, but like it), maybe Star Citizen’s recent developments (or rather this mini game), and generally waste your time. But now you have this. So, there you are.

Smells Good Man

GTA V! ON THE MASTER PLATFORM FOR THE MASTER RACE!
(That’s the PC, for the peasants among you.)

smells-good-man-01

That’s right, folks. GTA V has finally released on PC, and hot damn if it isn’t my first new-release pre-order game-purchase of the year! I’ve been chomping at the bit to play this since it got rolled out to the peasant platforms last year and studiously avoiding spoilers, too-detailed opinions, reviews, and gameplay videos (okay, I cheated a little with those, particularly after the PS4 and XBONE releases). After all this time, I now have the game sitting on my work desk. It and the lovely box, cover, (seven!) discs, map, poster, and most of all smell have all been doing their delicious parts to taunt and tease me, but it won’t be long now…

Gibs: Special Zombie Plant Houses

This Gib is actually gonna be a quickie (like I’ve always meant them to be), because I’ve few waffles to make (read: rubbish to say) – Plants vs. Zombies on Origin is free, On The House! Much like the last time, except not sidelined by BF3. Hooray!

I’ve yet to actually play my free copy of PvZ since getting it last time and my only experience with the title is from a pirated version of old. It was good fun then, though I found it wore thin for me sooner than it did for others.

And, referring to the “Special” part of the title, Origin’s also having themselves a Great Games Sale! “Get up to 75% off select titles” the page says. I scrolled through the selection, averting my eyes to avoid temptation, and there are some nice deals going. I may well get Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening to complement the free Dragon Age: Origins I got some time back and round out my Dragon Age experience (when I finally get to it…).

Something about something…

something about me
Bet’cha thought I’d skip a month, ‘eh? Well you’d have bet wrong, and you’d have owed money to someone. But you probably didn’t bet, which is probably good. So good, in fact, you might feel generous enough to give, oh, half of what you would have bet to me instead? Except you can’t, because I haven’t put any way of accepting stranger’s money on here. So, yeah… Better luck next time.

Anyway, this post’s less free-game and more personal-blog (except my life is games and tech so, obviously, there’ll be some of that). Sorry. That’s just a little heads-up to the freebie-watchers so they don’t waste their time. You’re welcome.

Gibs: Today’s Theme is Hospital(s)

Wah-hey, it’s a another year. I almost skipped this post, because laziness or some such thing, but eventually my urge to type about the newest free thing on Origin won out and now here we are. So to get right to the pointy end, Origin’s latest On the House thing is ye olde Bullfrog classic Theme Hospital. To get it, you need to do the usual On the House thing of logging in to the Origin application/client, check out the Store, and click all over those helpful bits that, currently at least, are trying to tell you about what this very post is also telling you about (that is, Theme Hospital being free, obviously). Which is a terrible way of saying “open the Origin client and follow the prompts.” No idea how long this’ll last, Origin only gives us a cryptic “Available for a Limited Time Only” message, and I’ve no idea what’s up with the capitalisation…

Gibs: Sim 2000 Special City Edition

What? Okay, I seem to have run out of ways to headline things that are getting the On The House treatment on Origin. Ignoring my failure in headline composition, EA has dropped SimCity 2000 Special Edition in the freebie-bin. I’m starting to feel like they decide to drop these things every time I neglect this blog, because I’d be compelled to post about their new promotion… Which is nice of them, I guess. Thanks EA.
