Gibs: Today’s Theme is Hospital(s)

Wah-hey, it’s a another year. I almost skipped this post, because laziness or some such thing, but eventually my urge to type about the newest free thing on Origin won out and now here we are. So to get right to the pointy end, Origin’s latest On the House thing is ye olde Bullfrog classic Theme Hospital. To get it, you need to do the usual On the House thing of logging in to the Origin application/client, check out the Store, and click all over those helpful bits that, currently at least, are trying to tell you about what this very post is also telling you about (that is, Theme Hospital being free, obviously). Which is a terrible way of saying “open the Origin client and follow the prompts.” No idea how long this’ll last, Origin only gives us a cryptic “Available for a Limited Time Only” message, and I’ve no idea what’s up with the capitalisation…

And since this is a pretty old game, lacking in certain modern niceties and still carrying a few bugs and unintentional oddities, it may be worth checking out CorsixTH. The mod fixes some things and adds many others, like a level editor and various UI tweaks and windowed mode support.

Theme Hospital could well be the very first management sim I had any serious play with. I loved the game when I was younger, partly for the gameplay but mainly for the humour (“Please don’t feed the rodents…”). When away from it, I’d spend my time coming up with my own strange ailments that I’d want my virtual patients afflicted with, and insane bio’s for the staff of imaginary hospitals I’d think up. I even drew out the character cards, with mug shots and everything. Gosh, those were fun… Pity I tended to scribble and doodle on any scrap paper closest to hand which subsequently got lost, or I might upload a scan of one. If I ever find one, I endeavour now to get it on here then. Hopefully I’ll remember…

I still think of any stomach ailment as the Squits…

Thanks, NAG Online!
